This week, our weather will be affected by Hurricane Ida as it makes landfall along the gulf coast. Several cold fronts will help keep temperatures at or below normal.
Tonight, cloud cover will increase as category 1 Hurricane Ida nears the gulf coast. Moisture will begin to surge onshore ahead of the system allowing a few scattered showers to form as far north as southern Arkansas. At the same time, a cold front will begin to move across the plains toward the state. As Ida makes landfall Monday afternoon near the Louisiana-Mississippi border, the front will start to push its way through Arkansas, followed by a wave of high pressure.
The front will nearly stall Monday night. At this time, it appears that this will help keep the heavy rain from the tropical system to the east of the state. There will not be enough moisture in place to interact with the front. Scattered showers will still be possible through Tuesday morning until Ida moves off to the east. Even so, rainfall totals are not expected to exceed a half inch.
The front will move east Tuesday night and the high pressure will move in, pushing out any remaining clouds. Cooler air will begin to move in Wednesday and the clear skies will allow the air to cool at night with lows in the mid 40’s. This will last through the rest of the week until another cold front moves in for the weekend.
This new cold front will enter the region Friday night and will move slowly through the state. At this time, it appears there will be little moisture to work with and only scattered showers are expected. The front will move out of the state Sunday afternoon and more cool air will follow.
The high for the week is 70. The low is 45. Hurricane Ida is expected to make landfall Monday afternoon along the Louisiana-Mississippi border. While the approaching cold front should keep away most of the rain, there could be a few strong scattered showers that will produce heavy rain. Even so, little if any flooding is expected. Have a good week!
