It looks like the first major cool down of the season will occur this week as a strong cold front moves through the state. Storms will produce heavy rain and some flooding could occur.
Tonight, a strong cold front will finally move out of the plains and into Arkansas. Rain will form ahead of and along the front and a few strong storms could form. As the front moves slowly into central Arkansas, rainfall will become heavy and some localized flooding could occur. The system will continue to push across the state Monday, finally moving off to the west by Monday afternoon.
By the time the front exits, parts of central Arkansas could receive between one and two inches of rain, except larger amounts in thunderstorms. Even after two weeks without rain, the ground is still full of water and may not be able to handle these large amounts. Flooding will be especially likely in low lying areas and places near bodies of water.
Monday night, cold air will begin to move in behind the front. Temperatures will fall rapidly, reaching the mid 30’s in parts of northern Arkansas. Tuesday, temperatures will struggle to reach the upper 40’s. Some wrap-around moisture will move into the area and there could be a few sightings of snow flurries.
Wednesday, a southerly flow will return. Skies will clear out and temperatures will begin to rise, making it back to the low 60’s by Thursday. Friday, a weak disturbance will move toward Arkansas. Moisture will begin to build thanks to the southerly flow and a few showers could develop. This will be the case throughout the weekend with several weak disturbances affecting the area. At this time, it does not appear that this will be a major rain-maker.
The high for the week is 68. The low is 36. With a strong storm system moving through, there could be some flooding. Stay aware of the developing storm system and take appropriate action if any warnings are issued. Have a good week!
