Automated Storm Alerts

What are Automated Storm Alerts?

Automated storm alerts are computer generated alerts sent out by e-mail when a storm cell's max dbz reaches a certain threshold.  These alerts are generated by the radar program Storm Predator when a strong cell enters a preset scan zone.  Once an alert is sent out, it will be at least an hour before another one is sent.

Should I get Storm Alerts?

Automated storm alerts will only be valid for you if you live or work within the set scan zone.  Only strong storms within the scan zone will activate the alert system.  Counties in the scan zone include Conway, Dallas, Faulkner, Garland, Grant, Hot Spring, Jefferson, Lonoke, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, and Yell. To see if you are in the scan zone, see the image below.

What will the Alerts look like?

Automated storm alerts will be sent as an email.  There will be a text that looks like this:

Example:

Storm Predator has generated an alert in your scan zone for the radar site in Little Rock (LZK).  The maximum level detected was 60 dbZ.  The precipitation threshold for the scan zone is 50 dbZ (VIP level 8).

It will have an attachment of the current radar pass that will look similar to this:

Precautions:

During long periods of severe weather, such as a slow moving front, you may receive several automated alerts.  If you don't check your mailbox often, these alerts could accumulate quickly, using up space.  We recommend that you subscribe only if you check your mailbox at least once a day.

If a storm cell within the scan zone triggers an alert and then weakens, Storm Predator will issue another alert if the cell restrengthens to the threshold level, even if it is within an hour of the previous alert.  This is a glitch that doesn't occur often.
